The Brasimone Basin is a charming Tuscan-Emilian Apennines artificial lake situated at an altitude of about 850 meters. In 1911 was built the dam of Scalere, a great engineering work, made in the industrial age of the early twentieth century. Considered one of the best Italian dams, both from the engineering point of view at the time, both for its environmental impact. Made with stones of that place, still today, looking at it , the visual impact is harmonic, not violent . The territory has preserved its charming and fascinating look.
The hydroelectric dam, built in the valley, needed to power the Porrettana railway, the line between Bologna-Pistoia, inaugurated in 1864 by King Vittorio Emanuele II in person. Today, its main function is to produce energy through the continuous exchange, managed by ENEL, of considerable bodies of water with nearby Suviana Basin. For this reason, the water level can vary even of some meters over a few hours .
In the 60s the shores of the lake were invaded by vacationers from the big cities of Tuscany and Emilia Romagna and the lake became very famous. In a few years there was a number of tourists ever imagined before. They grew the reception facilities and entertainment, not least a nightclub with the most advanced equipment, the Black Bull, which attracted thousands of young people.
From the late '60s on they began work on the construction of a nuclear power plant by ENEA. The projects were different and although it never came into operation, thousands of workers made their way to the Brasimone lake to work at the industrial hub of ENEA . Then tourists gradually changed their holiday destinations and beach attendance plummeted, while the referendum on nuclear power in 1987 froze the business of nuclear power construction.
In 1995 it was established a protected area, the Regional Park of Suviana and Brasimone Lakes.

Il Bacino del Brasimone è un affascinante invaso artificiale dell’Appennino Tosco-Emiliano situato ad un’altitudine di circa 850 metri. Nel 1911 venne costruita la diga delle Scalere, un'opera di enorme portata ingegneristica, figlia dell'età industriale dei primi del Novecento. E' considerata una delle migliori dighe italiane, sia dal punto di vista ingegneristico dell'epoca, sia per l'impatto ambientale. Fatta con pietre del luogo, ancora oggi, guardandola, l'impatto visivo che se ne ha non è violento, anzi è di armonica inclusione. Il territorio infatti ha conservato il suo aspetto incantevole e suggestivo.
Il bacino idroelettrico che si costruì nella valle serviva per l'alimentazione della ferrovia Porrettana, la linea tra Bologna-Pistoia inaugurata nel 1864 da Vittorio Emanuele II in persona. Oggi la sua funzione principale è quella di produrre energia, grazie al continuo scambio, gestito dall’ENEL, di notevoli masse d’acqua con il vicino Bacino di Suviana, più grande del Brasimone, ma dalle caratteristiche molto simili. Per questo motivo il livello dell’acqua può variare anche di alcuni metri nell’arco di poche ore.
Negli anni '60 le coste del lago erano invase dai bagnanti provenienti dalle grandi città toscane ed emiliane e il lago divenne una "Rimini dell'Appennino". In pochi anni il lago si ritrovò a gestire una frequentazione turistica mai immaginata. Crebbero le strutture di ricezione e di intrattenimento, non ultima una discoteca all'avanguardia, il Black Bull, che attirò migliaia di giovani.
A partire dalla fine degli anni '60 sulle rive del lago iniziarono i lavori per la costruzione di una centrale nucleare da parte dell'ENEA. I progetti furono diversi e benché la centrale non entrò mai in funzione, migliaia di operai si dirigevano verso Brasimone per lavorare al polo industriale dell'ENEA.
Poi il turismo pian piano cambiò le proprie mete di villeggiatura e la frequentazione balneare si ridusse drasticamente, mentre il referendum sul nucleare del 1987 congelò l'attività di costruzione della centrale nucleare.
Nel 1995 venne istituita un'area protetta, il Parco Regionale dei Laghi di Suviana e Brasimone.
